Out the blue applications lost the maximize, close, reduce buttons in the top right of Window. New terminal Windows start at top left of screen and can't be moved.
The chooser applet at the bottom of screen was gone and the 4 desktop buttons were gone. Also terminal windows and menu options in all apps would loose focus the second the mouse was moved so I could not type in a command window or pick a menu option A quick Google gave a quick answer to the fix. I got a crippled terminal window opened and typed:
$sudo xfwm4
And the problem was fixed The command instantly fixed the issues but there were some residual error messages that I ignored since my goal was met.
xfwm4 is the xfce window manager and "is responsible for the placement of windows on the
screen, provides the window decorations and allows you for instance to
move, resize or close them."http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfwm4/introduction"
Update: This problem got out of hand and I continually had to run the xfwm4 command. I researched it on Google and did not have much luck. Since I was not really impressed with Fedora 17 I opted to reload with Mint 13 Maya running the Cinnamon desktop. I also loaded up XFCE and it had the same issue I had on Fedora 17. I am guessing that an update/change in XFCE corrupted it. I really did not troubleshoot to much and have settled on the Cinnamon Desktop. I have not had much experience with Debian/Ubuntu systems but so far I like Mint. I especially like that all codecs and browser plugins I use were available without installing them separately.
